The 2004/05 wasn’t great for Grimsby Town. With Russell Slade in the hotseat, the Mariners finished 18th in League 2 but it was clearly a season of rebuilding as Slade prepared for a tilt at promotion the next year.

Look at the squad for the season and there are some great names jumping out – John McDermott, Michael Reddy, Rob Jones to name three – and some who’ve passed into Town folklore, not always for the best of reasons.

Thomas Pinault is as famous for Slade’s comments as his football; Justin Whittle left a lasting mark on Alan Shearer and Ashley Sestanovich went on to serve time for his part in an armed robbery. There were also plenty of journeymen and trialists passing through Blundell Park. It was a Slade thing.

200405 nike away 2

Town’s kit manufacturer at the time was Nike and while some fans might complain that their kits can be generic, one can’t argue with the quality and style of most of their offerings. The away kit in 2004/05 was simple and effective. I wouldn’t go as far as saying classy though; I think the ‘Mariners Pie’ addition to the logo of longstanding sponsor Young’s spoils it.

I must love this shirt though as I have two of them 🙂
